2000 CAMPAIGN
VISION

|
Nonviolence is a dynamic philosophy and proactive way of life based
on a reverence for Life. Nonviolence is a powerful catalyst for personal
transformation and social change, as effectively demonstrated by Mahatma
Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Their 50th and 30th memorial
anniversaries inspired the first Season for Nonviolence campaign in 1998.
A Season for Nonviolence-Los Angeles (SNV-LA) reaches out to support
youth and schools in the global Season for Nonviolence 2000 campaign that
is aligned with the United Nations Declaration designating this first decade
of the new millennium as the "Decade
of Nonviolence”. This Declaration was sponsored by Nobel
Peace Laureates throughout the world.

Memorandum of Understanding - Educator/SNV-LA Liaison
The vision for the A Season for Nonviolence – Los Angeles’ (SNV-LA) Youth
and Schools campaign was developed to inspire and to empower youth and
educators to become effective agents for a nonviolent culture in their
own lives and communities. Our purpose, as SNV-LA school liaisons,
is to assist educators in developing a Nonviolence Campaign in their school/organization
through personal coaching, educational materials, referral services, and
information.
Educators agree to:
1. Share the 64 Ways to Practice Nonviolence with your students and
co-workers.
2. Identify the nature of the campaign that you would like to develop
for your school/organization and implement your program.
3. Communicate with your assigned liaison, your ideas, participation
in, and evaluation of the campaign. Communicate in a timely manner.
4. Provide documentation of activities (i.e., photos, student’s
written work, creative projects, event programs, newsletters, etc).
5. Provide feedback on all activities regarding the campaign.
Complete requested documentation in a timely manner.
SNV-LA Liaison agree to:
1. Work with educator to develop campaign strategy for their school.
2. Communicate with educator on a regular basis regarding ongoing
educational opportunities for students and educators as well as special
events.
3. Provide educators with information regarding curriculum and
media as well as community resources for campaign development and implementation.
4. Empower educators through regular contact.
5. Visit the school/organization site at least twice during the
campaign to support activities and the efforts of the educator.
6. Receive feedback from the educator regarding their campaign experiences
and maintain current and accurate documentation of their campaign participation.
| Vision Statement
Our mission is to heal, empower, and revitalize our lives and our communities
through the practice of nonviolence as a way of life. Through education,
inspiration and cooperative action, we are creating a society that honors
the dignity and worth of every human being. We believe that each
person can move the world in the direction of peace through their daily
nonviolent choice and action.

Web Dialogue Instructions
|
A Season for Nonviolence and sharing
LA are pleased to provide interactive web discussion areas for
the Youth and Schools 2000 Campaign. We have set up two areas, one
for teachers
and one for students.
You can narrow the focus and participate within your group only, or broaden
the focus to include others from the Los Angeles area. Sharing LA
is also a resource database with a ratings capability -- help us build
a shared list of nonviolence resources rated for interest.
Two $100 prizes are offered for the best student essay and best teacher
/ administrator essay on the question: "What will a Center
for Nonviolence in Los Angeles contribute to the community?"
To be eligible, essays must be posted in the students
or teachers
area no later than May 15, 2000. Winning essays will be selected
in part based on sharing LA ratings, so be sure to rate your own
essay and bring your friends! Teachers: please consider assigning
the essay as a homework project if your classroom has web access.
Tips for using the web exchanges:
 |
students
and teachers
-- take the 20 minute Guided Tour or be adventurous
-- plunge ahead and try the web exchange on your own -- this can be fun |
 |
when you first go in, you are "Anonymous" -- the best thing to do is to
login -- this is easy -- just click the login link at the top of the page |
 |
when you login, if you don't have an email address, type "none" |
 |
write down your new password and put it in your wallet |
 |
if you have questions, click on the "LA Host" link and send an email to
your web host -- your question will be answered within 24 hours |
 |
you are most welcome to call your LA Host, Roger Eaton, at work (310) 553-6330
x 33478 or home (310) 450-7071 - he will step you through the online interface
and explain in detail if that is what you need |
 |
click "broaden network focus" to go up a level and include more people
in the discussion -- at first you are with students or teachers only --
go up one level and the messages are from both students and teachers --
go up another level and messages are from anyone involved in Season for
Nonviolence activities -- at the top level, sharing
LA messages are from the general Los Angeles public |
 |
in your explorations, be sure to click on "Discussion List" -- from there,
click on any topic to see messages written under that topic -- since we
are just starting up there may be no messages under a particular topic
-- in that case you are invited to write a first message |
 |
from the "Discussion List" select "Books" or "Links" or "Organizations"
to add a resource for the shared resource database -- for instance, first
select "Books" and then click "Write Message" and help us build a bibliography
of books about nonviolence |
 |
both students and teachers are encouraged to reply to each other's messages
-- this is what makes the experience fun and educational -- it is easy
-- just click the "Reply" link when you are reading someone's message |
 |
when you are making a reply, try clicking the "Quote" button -- this will
bring the message you are replying to into your reply -- this is often
useful |
 |
the "Search/Filters" link is worth a look -- first broaden network focus
until you are at the sharing LA
level, then select "Everything LA" from the Discussion List -- this will
bring you to the list of all messages - now go to Search/Filters and change
to sort by value -- this will bring the most interesting and approved messages
to the top of the list according to the ratings the messages have been
given -- you can also sort by controversy |
 |
if you particularly like or dislike a message, you can rate the message
-- you will find an easy rating box just below the message -- the ratings
enable everyone to share the best messages |
