What This Training is About "...Nonviolence requires directing your energies toward the cause rather than the effects of injustice, directing attention towards the system as opposed to the plight resulting from the inequities in our system ... developing strength and courage to take a stand... In Los Angeles we're gearing up a movement. We're exploring philosophy, methods, strategies, goals, a uniform and structured approach to dealing with a violent culture ... we're generating a cure for our society." --Alicia Renee Farris Facilitated by Alicia Renee Farris, Executive Director, Michigan Institute for Nonviolence Education (MINE). Ms Farris spearheaded the award-winning youth Nonviolence Training Program which introduced more than 35,000 youth and adults to nonviolence as espoused by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She has invested the last 12 years of her life towards healing the inequities of racial polarity, apathy and injustice. Bernard Lafayette, who was mentor to Alicia Renee Farris, was schooled in nonviolence by Rev. James Lawson. Featured Guest Rev. James Lawson, National Chair of the Fellowship of Reconciliation and pastor of Holman United Methodist Church in Los Angeles. Dr. Martin Luther King called him, "The leading nonviolence theorist in the world.". At Dr. King's invitation, Rev. Lawson became Director of Nonviolent Education for the SCLC. An advisor to SNCC, he was coordinator for the freedom ride of 1961. He currently works widely with community and inter-faith coalitions for justice and peace and has served with the Urban League and the NAACP. For fifty years Rev. Lawson has continued to be a tireless activist for peace, justice and nonviolence. He mentored nonviolent leadership within the labor, antiwar, and human rights movements. |
