Dear Special Friends of SNV:

A Season for Nonviolence - Los Angeles (SNV-LA) was established in 1998 as part of the first Season for Nonviolence campaign, honoring the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  That first year, 280 local organizations supported our campaign and sponsored 165 nonviolence events.  Since our establishment, we have directly touched the lives of more than 35,000 people in the Los Angeles area.

As our mission statement reads, “We are dedicated to creating a society that honors the dignity and worth of every human being.”  The question now is: Are you ready?  Are you ready, in some small way, to take a stand for the world in which you want to live?  SNV-LA challenges you to catch the vision--your opportunity to directly participate in fostering a culture of nonviolence--a way of life that can transform, empower and revitalize our communities now.  Gandhi did.  King did.  Cesear Chavez did.  And together, we can too.

An amazing year! Thanks to you, our contributors, volunteers, and supporters, it has been an awe-inspiring, productive, and meaningful year for SNV-LA.  Here are a few highlights:

  • SNV-LA serves on the public Task Force for Gang Violence Prevention at the invitation of State Senator Hayden.
  • SNV-LA joined forces with L.A.’s preeminent youth nonviolence group, Tribe, to create ongoing nonviolence COALITION workshops.
  • SNV-LA and Creative Visions brought five Colombian youth to Los Angeles for the   world premiere of Soldiers of Peace, a CNN documentary about their work in Colombia. And 900 Los Angeles-area youth convened at Agape International Center of Truth to meet these five courageous teens.
  • SNV-LA facilitated additional screenings of Soldiers of Peace at Santa Monica College  and at three local high schools where 1700 youth viewed the film and met with the five Nobel Peace Prize nominees.
  • SNV-LA welcomes ART SHARE - L.A. as a collaborator on an arts project with youth to create a mobile kiosk that will house video equipment for national and local screenings of Soldiers for Peace and other peace videos at schools throughout Los Angeles.
  • SNV-LA was awarded a Proclamation by State Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa  in acknowledgment for its work and advancements in the field of nonviolence.
Thank you for your support,

Campaign 2000

As we prepare for the United Nations’ “Decade of Nonviolence,” (2001 - 2010) our primary focus is Youth and Schools. To date, forty schools have enrolled to participate in
the 2000 Nonviolence campaign.  Educators and youth will be exploring how nonviolent principles and practices can contribute to the quality of life in their personal lives, schools and communities.

With your help

SNV-LA is supported by people like you who desire a world based on a culture of peace and nonviolence.  We invite you to become an active partner in building a world that is the “blessed community,” as expressed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Your tax-deductible contribution will enable SNV-LA to continue this work.  As Gandhi reminded us, we must “Be the change you want to see”.
