BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF EVENT:
Recently, President George W. Bush has identified Iran as a country that supports terrorism in an "evil axis" with Iraq and North Korea. While Islamicism continues to characterize Iran's public face, the reality is far more complex. There are more women, for instance, serving in Iran's parliament today than there are women in the U.S. Congress. The Internet has pervaded Iran, while at times, life in the streets sometimes appears unchanged from decades past. Iranian cinema and art can be cutting-edge, while in some ways, politically and socially, the country has taken steps backwards since the Revolution.  At Beyond Baroque Literary/Arts Center in Venice, author Terence Ward read and signed his new memoir, while hosing a public dialogue on Iran: then and now.

This piece examined the conditions and causes of violence, and social advocates, artists, political and religious leaders presented their approaches, engaging in dialogues, workshops, panel discussions, and personal stories of the triumph over violence.

ANGEL ISLAND EXHIBIT  /  DATE OF EVENT:  4-2 through 5-2  /  TIME OF EVENT:  By Appointment /  LOCATION:  West Los Angeles College  /  ORGANIZATION (S):  Cindy Xian Suriyani  -  West LA College / Free – by appointment
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF EVENT:  Presented were new works by Los Angeles-based artist C. Suriyani that explored themes of identity, displacement and inclusion, and ultimately of Americanism.  In the installation entitled “Angel Island”, composed of light, large Chinese rice paper scrolls up to 15 feet in length, and life-sized shadow puppets, the immigrant experience is reinterpreted in its emotional and symbolic context.  Many Asian immigrants, instead of going through Ellis Island were harrowingly detained on “Angel Island” off the coast of San Francisco.  These prisoners wrote poetry on the walls, bedposts, underneath beds and every other open surface they could find of the barracks.  This exhibit exposes the unknown Americans,
immigrants struggling for a voice, for the most basic of human rights.  Ultimately, the exhibit is about the human ability to confound rage with poetry, and the immigrant and American resilience and spirit in the face of turbulence and ignorance.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF EVENT:  This function was a screening which benefited Center for the Advancement of Nonviolence.  Originally released as a one-night benefit nationwide, this portrait of Martin Luther King, Jr. is not a sentimental tribute to a fallen leader.  It is the biography of a movement, from the Montgomery bus boycott to the assassin’s bullet.  Newsreel and television footage recall the civil rights campaigns as they actually happened.  The film is history, it is also art.  Critics across the country have named it one of the most acclaimed documentaries of our time.
